High School Student Earns a Woodworking Win
A woodworking project turned into an award-winning venture for a Seaford High School student. Mary Padavan submitted a cutting board she made while in 10th grade into a competition at the Long Island Fair and took home first place.
Mary, now a junior, submitted the cutting board into the woodcrafts category in the hobbies division. The fair was held from Sept. 3-5 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration and featured dozens of competitive exhibits sponsored by the Agricultural Society of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
“I just like the way it came out,” Mary said about why she was inspired to enter the cutting board into the competition. She used three different types of wood, cutting and sanding the individual pieces before gluing them together and staining the final product. The project took several weeks to complete in her woodworking class with teacher Nick Isgro. Mary brought the cutting board home but said she doesn’t use it too much because she wants to keep it in good shape.
