Harbor Students Become Experts and Authors
First they gathered facts. Then they wrote, illustrated and published. That was the process second graders followed at Seaford Harbor Elementary School to create their own nonfiction books.
In a project that combined reading and writing, each student first selected a topic to learn more about. Teacher Jessica Koudelka said students then went on a fact-finding expedition by reading many books and articles on their topics. Once they became “experts,” it was time to write.
From science to sports, the topics students chose were wide-ranging. They included many of the essential elements that authors include in their “All About” books, including a glossary, a table of contents and illustrations.
