Seaford Students Explore Culture Together
Elementary students in the district were able to explore the world on March 26, and they only had to go as far as Seaford High School.
The annual World Language Night had a new format this year as it was open to students throughout the district. High school students facilitated activities in classrooms representing eight different countries. Children could get their passports stamped after visiting each location.
When youngsters visited China, they wrote “happy new year” using Chinese symbols and created paper lanterns. In Italy, they made paper pizzas and in Germany they colored gingerbread men. For France, there was a matching game with notable landmarks and the room for Mexico featured activities relating to Day of the Dead.
High school students performed songs from around the world in the international music room. They also showed their charitable side by selling bracelets for the Pulsera Project to supports education, environmental and health initiatives in Central American countries.
One of the most popular sports in the world is soccer, so children could take part in a FIFA video game tournament. There was also face-painting and photo stations.
World Language Department Chairwoman Patricia Foley explained that World Language Night was expanded this year into a districtwide event to showcase the program through hands-on activities. It also gave high school and elementary school students a chance to interact with each other through cultural exploration.
“This was a good community building activity to show all of our Seaford students a different perspective of the world,” Ms. Foley said.
