Plant Yourself in the Audience for 'Little Shop of Horrors’
Thespians from Seaford High School’s Drama Club are making their final preparations for the dark musical comedy, “Little Shop of Horrors,” with three performances on March 6 and 7. The show features 32 students who are ready to entertain audiences with their acting, dancing and singing talents.
“Little Shop of Horrors” focuses on Seymour, a shy florist assistant who discovers a mysterious plant after a solar eclipse. As the plant grows, so does Seymour’s fame as well as the consequences of his choices.
Seymour is played by freshmen Max DiMola, who said that the show is very unique and features characters with big personalities. Senior Cameron Calderaro is Audrey, Seymour’s co-worker and love interest. Sophomore Roran Cassidy plays flower shop owner Mr. Mushnik and sophomore Henry Brock portrays Dr. Orin Scrivello, Audrey’s sadistic dentist boyfriend.
Cameron, who is in her sixth and final performance at Seaford High School, said it is interesting to do a show where one of the main characters is not actually a person – the plant – as it gets larger throughout. Audiences will love the full-cast numbers, she added, which feature dynamic vocals and dancing.
“Everybody on stage at once is when we’re at our peak,” Cameron said.
Major musical numbers in the two-act show include “The Meek Shall Inherit,” “Skid Row” and the finale. It is directed and choreographed by Elyse Cruz. Also supporting the show are producer Dr. Anthony Romeo, vocal director Pamela Brinkman, set designer Grant Weber, sound director Daniel Krueger, lighting director Kevin O’Reilly, backstage manager Caroline Feryo and the student stage crew.
Ms. Cruz has fond memories of performing in “Little Shop of Horrors” through local theater and was excited for this to be her first musical as Seaford’s director. She noted that the cast has strong chemistry and everyone has worked hard to develop their characters.
“I love this show,” she said. “I wanted to go as big as possible. We have a great cast and their strength is their sense of humor.”
Show times are Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Seaford High School auditorium. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and $5 for Seaford staff and faculty. Children under 6 can get into the Saturday matinee for $5. For tickets or more information, call (516) 592-4337.
