Pair to be Awarded for Kindness and Inclusivity
Two faculty members in the Seaford School District have been recognized for their exceptional commitment to creating safe and inclusive environments for all students. Seaford High School English teacher Kathryn Miedl and Seaford Middle School nurse Lauren Timoney will receive 2026 Long Island School Hero awards.
The accolade is presented by the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying. Ms. Miedl and Ms. Timoney were nominated by members of the Seaford school community and were selected because they embody the values of kindness, empathy and leadership. Their actions have positively impacted students and colleagues, and inspired others to foster a culture of respect and understanding.
Ms. Miedl, an English language arts teacher in Seaford for three years, says the culture of inclusivity begins in her classroom where she calls students her “co-teachers,” because she believes in their voice and responsibility to be a role models and leaders. Each class works together through team-building activities within novel and research units and are constantly in discussion about the real messages that are being delivered through literature about humans and society. By digging deep into texts, her “co-teachers” learn empathy through the lives of the characters they study, and it reminds them how to be a good human being in their own lives.
“It is an honor to be recognized for this award,” Ms. Miedl said. “I love coming to work here each day and having a space to be creative while exploring stories and different topics with my students. There is no better feeling as an educator to know that your school trusts you to be yourself and believes in what you’re doing for the students, all while supporting you and being available for whatever you need to be successful.”
Ms. Timoney, the middle school nurse for the past five years, say she strives to treat every student, staff member and family with kindness. As a school nurse, she recognizes that people often need someone to listen to and make them feel supported. She aims to create a safe and welcoming space where students feel comfortable coming to her whether for medical care or simply for someone to talk to.
“I am honored and grateful to receive the Long Island School Hero Award,” Ms. Timoney said. “It means a lot to know that the care and support I provide to students, staff and families is appreciated. This recognition reminds me why I love what I do and motivates me to continue making a positive difference in my school community.”
Ms. Miedel and Ms. Timoney will be recognized along with honorees from other Long Island school districts at a reception on Oct. 19 at The Watermill in Smithtown.
