Manor Students Go Mad for Math in Schoolwide Competition

The excitement over numbers is contagious at Seaford Manor Elementary School, which is hosting its annual March Mathness competition. Organized by the student council, the grades are vying to score the most points and fill up their pots of gold.

Students enthusiastically check the leader board each week. There are six pots of gold, one each for kindergarten through fifth grade, hanging in the main hallway. They are colored in as children get questions right. In addition to grade-level bragging rights, the class that totals the most points throughout the competition will be designated the Manor Mathematicians and earn a prize.

Each grade gets two questions per week, related to the content and concepts they are learning. The problems come from the Illustrative Math program and are shared via Microsoft Forms. Teachers can pull the questions up on the classroom display board, which students then solve and submit on paper.

At the end of each week, student council members collect the responses from each class, check the answers as provided by advisers Kristin Nelson and Lisa Perrone, and tally up the points.

“Kids are very competitive,” fifth grade student council member Sean O’Callaghan said. “March Mathness is a lot of fun because you’re learning and having friendly competition at the same time.”
