Juniors Earn Scholarships for Academic Achievements

Three Seaford High School students have earned scholarships from renowned universities for their academic achievements and extracurricular involvement.

Junior Madelyn Boyon received the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Innovation Award. During her three years in Seaford High School, Madelyn has challenged herself with rigorous, college-level work. This year she is taking Advanced Placement Physics and last year was enrolled in AP Statistics. She is also a member of Mathletes, which participates in monthly competitions against students from other area high schools to solve complex word problems covering a multitude of mathematical concepts. After high school, Madelyn wants to major in math or statistics.

“Madelyn is such as strong student and she clearly excels in math and the sciences,” said guidance counselor Sarah Squicciarini, who nominated her.

The Rochester Institute of Technology presented junior Autumn Feitzinger with the Woman in STEM Award. If Autumn chose to attend RIT, she would receive an undergraduate scholarship of up to $24,000 per year for four years.

Autumn is president of the Robotics team and secretary of Mathletes. She also is enrolled in AP Physics and the AP Java computer science class. Next year, she plans to take AP Calculus and AP Statistics, and wants to major in engineering in college.

Junior Brian Karaman received RIT’s Humanities and Social Sciences Award, which also includes a potential $24,000 annual scholarship. Humanities courses Brian is taking this year include AP Language and Composition and pre-AP French.

Music is an area where Brian particularly excels. He is a member of multiple ensembles, playing both the saxophone and clarinet, is student leader of the marching band, a three-time All-County musician and treasurer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. In college, he plans to major in science on a pre-med track.
