High School Trio Earn National Merit Recognition
Three Seaford High School seniors have been recognized for their academic achievements in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship program.
Matthew Kind was named a National Merit Semifinalist, placing him within the top 1% of PSAT scorers in New York State. He is among more than 16,000 students nationwide to earn semifinalist status. About 95% of semifinalists will advance to finalist standing, and will then compete for more than 6,900 National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring, totaling about $26 million.
“In tandem with this honor, Matthew was also named as our valedictorian, a position that reflects his excellence both academically and personally,” guidance counselor Suzanne Cosenza said. “In every endeavor, he consistently ranks among the top 1%. He approaches every task with unwavering determination and gives 100% to everything he does.”
Emily Bauman and Brian Karaman were named National Merit Commended students, joining about 34,000 other students nationwide who received this distinction. Although they do not continue on in the competition, commended students are recognized for demonstrating outstanding potential for academic success and are among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2026 competition by taking the 2024 PSAT.
“I have seen firsthand how hardworking, bright and motivated she is,” guidance counselor Sarah Squicciarini said of Emily. “She has done an outstanding job balancing her academics and extracurricular activities, earning a strong grade point average and ranking in the top 25 of her senior class. Being named a National Merit Commended Student is a well-deserved recognition of Emily’s dedication and determination.”
Of Brian, Ms. Cosenza said, “As this year’s salutatorian, Brian is a hardworking and diligent student who brings that same dedication to every endeavor. Whether tackling academics, extracurriculars or personal goals Brian gives his all to everything he does.”
