The ‘Fun’damentals of Recess at Seaford Harbor
Fun, friendship and safety are the goals for Seaford Harbor Elementary School students during their mid-day break. That’s why a recess committee was put together to come up with a pact for youngsters to ensure that it’s a positive experience for all.
Principal Jennifer Bisulca said that the five recess promises set expectations in a positive way, emphasizing respect, sportsmanship and, most importantly, having fun. The initiative also incorporates traits from the Seaford Scholar profile, as students are encouraged to be good communicators, reflective and mindful of others.
The recess committee was formed last year, consisting of administrators, teachers and monitorial aides. Through their shared vision, the five promises were developed. This year, three large signs were made and are set up by the playground, blacktop and fields. The lunch/recess monitorial aides remind students of the promises before they engage in activities.
“The creation of the recess promises reinforces our commitment to the physical, social and emotional well-being of all students,” Ms. Bisulca said. “Recess is an important part of the school day, where children can have fun, interact with their friends and further develop the virtues of a Seaford Scholar.”
